Plant Your Cool Season Veggies Now

Now is the time to start planting your fall garden either in the ground, a raised bed or even a pot.

Popular cool season veggies are lettuce, kale, carrots, radishes, beets, spinach, swiss chard, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and peas. For more variety in your crops, plant seeds. Seed Savers Exchange, High Mowing Organic Seeds and Renees are some of my favorites.  This is also a great time to plant seed potatoes and garlic.

One of my favorite lettuces is Tennis Ball Lettuce. Thomas Jefferson, our third president, also liked it!

I like to plant several colors of carrots. There are yellow, purple and white carrots along with the normal orange ones.

Easter egg radishes are fun for children to grow-they come in pink, red, white and purple. One benefit of radishes is that they germinate very quickly.

If you have younger elementary school children, they might like the book, Tops and Bottoms. Then you can plant a tops and bottoms garden. Another theme garden for young children is a Peter Rabbit Garden-both of these gardens end up being a type of salad bowl garden.

If you plant kale, eventually you can make a smoothie from your own vegetables!
